Your Local Stairlift Supplier

by UppercutAndrew

Residential Stairlift Supplier

Residential Stairlifts

A residential stair lift is an economical way to remain in your home if mobility is becoming an issue. In Calgary and Edmonton, standard straight run stairlifts are typically stock items that can be installed in your home within 3 days of committing to the purchase.

Curved stair lifts, however, can take anywhere from 8-12 weeks to manufacturer as they are custom built to match your stairs exactly. Remote installations throughout the province of Alberta sometimes require greater coordination and lead times.

Stair Lifts Have Many Names

Stair lifts are sometimes referred to as chair lifts, stair chairs, or stair elevators, but they all fundamentally work the same way.Your lift will need to have a rail with a rack secured to the stairs, which allows the stairlift to ride up and down. This system is called a rack and pinion drive.

When installing a stairlift, a technician will have to mount several brackets to your stair treads to support the stair lift rail. These brackets are screwed down with 3/8” lag bolts through the carpet, tile or hardwood floor.

The rail runs the length of the stairway and typically takes up about 5 inches of your stairs. When the stairlift is folded up it usually will take up about 14 inches of the staircase.

Remote Control Stairlifts

Your stair lift will come with two remote controls that allow you to call or send the lift to the top or bottom landing. This is a nice feature as it allows the stairlift to have multiple users. These remotes can also be utilized to store the lift away from points on congestion.

What If The Power Goes Out?

A common question we get is “what if the power goes out, will my stair chair still operate?”. The answer is yes; a stairchair purchased from Uppercut Elevators and Lifts will operate utilizing a sophisticated battery system. The stairlift will automatically receive a charge when not in use. The charger then senses when the batteries are fully charged and turns itself off.

A stair-lift charger typically draws only about 3 amps, so the power consumption is minimal. This “trickle charger” plugs into a standard household outlet and is required to be within 10 feet from your stairlift rail. The plug can be at the top or bottom of the stairs.

Stairlift Service

Once you have your stair lift installed you want to be assured that should you need service, a technician is available. Since Uppercut Elevators and Lifts has offices in both Calgary and Edmonton you can have the peace of mind to know that service for your stairlift is only a call away. We suggest clients google “ stair lift reviews “ to find out what products are supported in the area where you live.

What Brand Do We Use?

Although we have access to several stair lift products, our Calgary and Edmonton offices stock and supply Bruno stair lifts as we feel they are the most reliable, cost-effective and have stood the test of time. I have personally been dealing with Bruno Stairlifts for close to 20 years and find them to be an excellent stair lift supplier to deal with. We offer free in-home consultations to ensure you get the correct product for your unique situation.

Your Experienced Elevator and Lift Supplier

by UppercutAndrew
  • Residential Elevator Services

In my twenty years of experience in the elevator and lift industry, I have seen many companies come and go.

I have seen countless failed products hit the market and unfortunately, I have seen numerous clients hand over their money and not have their expectations met.
When making a big ticket purchase such as an elevator or a lift it is important for potential clients to do their homework. Clients should look past flashy marketing material and ask hard hitting questions of their sales person.  The following is a list of questions that we believe your Elevator or lift supplier should have no issues answering.

  • How long has the distributer been in business; will they be around years from now should you need support?
  • How long has the product they represent been manufactured; will parts be available in the future?
  • Are there multiple  installations available for viewing?
  • Do they conduct their own installations or is this outsourced?
  • Do they make over the top claims such as offering warranty periods that far exceed their experience in the trade?
  • Can they provide testimonials  from real people who have had their product installed past the warranty period?
  • Who services the product if there is an issue, and can they be reached after regular business hours?

As I stated, my experience spans 20 years and I have been at the helm of Uppercut since 2013. The home elevator and commercial accessibility lift products we represent – RAM, Bruno, and Wessex – have all been manufactured for well over 25 years. We have many satisfied clients throughout the province who are happy to share their experience with you.

We do not outsource our installations or service work, and are available when you need us. 9:00 am to 5:00pm doesn’t cut it in our business. Uppercut Elevators and our suppliers have stood the test of time and have a proven track record for providing exceptional customer service throughout the province of Alberta. Our products can be found in every major center including: Calgary, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray. Our installations include not only private homes, but places of worship, community centers, schools, retail spaces, office and professional buildings.

Call or e-mail us today and ask about our client testimonials.

After all the proof is in the pudding; if your elevator and lift supplier can’t show you a happy customer, how do you know one exists?

Uppercut partners with Hearts & Hammers to create an accessible home

by UppercutAndrew
Community Home Accessibility

Accessible Home Solutions

Some days are problematic and quite frankly can be  difficult,  but not yesterday – yesterday was a joy. We were fortunate to be able to team up with the good folks at Hearts & Hammers to make a home wheelchair accessible for a Calgary family. Our scope of work was relatively simple, as we were asked to  provide a porch lift to gain access to the home. This basic porch lift installation was completed in about an hour, but this in no way depicts the effort and time put in by the Hearts & Hammers construction crew. Weeks before, this dedicated group of contractors did some pretty extraordinary modifications to the home.  They  completed a bathroom renovation  to make the space wheelchair accessible, replaced the carpet with laminate flooring, and widened several doorways. They also did all the site preparation to accommodate  the new RAM  Trus-T-Lift™ we installed

Outdoor Porch Lifts for Private and Public Applications

by UppercutAndrew
Commercial Accessibility Home Accessibility

The number one question we get when discussing an exterior lift is “how well does it work in the winter?”.  Although we have been fortunate in Alberta so far this year , we know all too well that freezing temperatures are never too far off the horizon.  So the question regarding cold weather operation is very valid.

20160203_160710

Our preferred lift for exterior installations is the RAM Trus-T-Lift™.  We recommend this wheelchair lift for both residential and commercial applications for the following reasons:

Drive Mechanism

The TrusT utilizes a reliable ACME screw drive. Unlike hydraulic drives, there is no hydraulic fluid to thicken when the temperature gets cold.

Finish

Some outdoor porch lifts are simply painted, but  all Trus-T-Lift™s are finished with a durable powder coating that ensures the finish will stand up to the elements

Zero Load Start

This is a feature that is unique to the Trus-T-Lift™ that allows the motor to run prior to picking up the user. This feature minimizes the strain on the device giving the motor a chance to “warm up” and therefore it doesn’t experience the stress of start- up while under load.  The result is fewer problems with breakers or fuses blowing under extreme conditions.

Simplicity

Keeping things simple has allowed this wheelchair lift to be a reliable accessibility solution when the temperatures drop. There are no hoses, valves, PC boards, pumps, or complex reslifts_5controllers associated with this drive .

Made in Alberta

Beyond any pride you may experience from buying local, it’s good to know that your outdoor lift is made for people, by people who live in the same environment as you. The Trus-T-Lift™ has been manufactured for close to 30 years in Edmonton, where they know a thing or two about winter conditions.

No hoistway necessary for this residential lift!

by UppercutAndrew

Wessex at bottomSometimes when we look at an application for  an accessibility lift, there simply isn’t enough space. In other instances we have the ideal space but the desired location will not allow for the hoistway and  corresponding load bearing wall.  I recently ran into this situation for one of our clients. No matter where we looked we couldn’t find both space and have the design be aesthetically pleasing. After exploring all the traditional elevator and lift systems I remembered seeing a “no hoistway” lift at the national elevator show in Boston last September. I had ridden in their working display model and recalled the smooth ride, and how compact,  and appealing it looked. This design abled us to place the lift exactly where the client wanted, without being an eyesore in their living room. The system works by  dropping a piece of the floor in place when the lift travels to the lower level. There are pressure sensitive plates on both the top and bottom of the lift to ensure that no one is in danger when the device is in use. The major benefit for this client was when the device was not being used he could send it to the basement and maintain the sight lines through his living room.

Greener Elevators and Lifts can save you money

by UppercutAndrew
Commercial Accessibility Home Accessibility Home Elevators News and Such

When I think of making an environmentally sound decision, especially if it pertains to green elevators or a lift purchase, I can point out 3 contributing factors .

alberta               #1 Where is the device  manufactured?

This seems pretty obvious but if you can purchase a locally manufactured elevator or lift, the transportation impact can be minimized. Buying local not only reduces emissions it saves you money on shipping costs associated with replacement parts.

#2 What impact could the drive mechanism have on the environment?

Devices that utilize large hydraulic pumps and reservoirs may need to have precautionary measures were taken, such as oil separators in the event of a hydraulic oil leak. This is to ensure that the oil cannot seep into the ground or water table. Some jurisdictions in the past have asked that food grade oil is used in order to alleviate this concern. Elevators and lifts that utilize a Traction Home elevatorCounter Weight or Screw Drive don’t actually pose this risk, as no hydraulic fluid is used. These greener solutions only require a 2″-3″  pit (or no pit at all) so there is less concern with disturbing ground water. You may even be able to save some money on your site preparation as hydraulic elevators can require anywhere from a 6″ to 60″ pit.

#3 What are the ongoing energy costs?

This cost is two fold; the energy consumed as it relates to the environment and the monetary cost directly to you. Do your research on how much energy your elevator or lift will require operating. Devices with a mechanical advantage such as a traction counterweight drive will be up to 50% more energy efficient that a comparative hydraulic unit. Hydraulic elevators have to pump fluid into a cylinder which is often located in a separate machine room.

It doesn’t matter if  your goal is to consciously protect the environment or simply save some money (energy costs, site preparation , and maintenance), it’s apparent that the two can go hand in hand.

Uppercut Elevators and Lifts – A local company serving the entire province of Alberta

by UppercutAndrew

What makes a company local? It is my belief that to be truly local your company needs to encompass the following principles:

LOCAL OWNERSHIPAlberta-flag

It’s not good enough to have a local manager or even a local owner that has other interests and doesn’t make the time to come into the office every day. Local owners answer the phone, deal with client concerns directly, and treat their staff fairly. After all, the owner sets the standard as to how the business operates. We believe in being accountable, fair and ethical. At Uppercut Elevators and Lifts, ownership is present every day  to make sure this standard is met.

OFFICES IN BOTH CALGARY AND EDMONTON

Believe is or not there are some companies that would mislead you into believing they are local because they have a PO box and a sales person who is willing to travel to your city on occasion. We believe in hiring the best local individuals who are able to participate and give back to the communities where they work and live. We believe it is imperative that local staff  are available to meet with you on your schedule not “when they are in town next”. We are proud to have offices in both Calgary and Edmonton, that are staffed with local employees.

LOCAL PRODUCTS

Our Elevators and Vertical Platform Lifts are manufactured in Alberta by Albertans. In these tough economic times, it only makes sense to support the business and tax base where we live.

PROUD TO BE LOCAL

We are pleased to be able to service the entire province of Alberta with our  superior elevator and lifting product line. We know we can accommodate  the needs of our clients better if we hire local representatives, and ownership is present to steer the ship in the right direction.
